Facing Down the Big Boxes

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

From the Rochester D & CThe Big Boxes are getting a makeover.

Developers and municipalities are working more closely together to create buildings that blend in with the community.
Good enough. But as I’m reading this article, I’m realizing that this supposed national trend is about changing “facades”. Is good design really just about aesthetics?

Organic Food in the Big Box Economy

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

Last week it was widely reported that Wal-mart has been making substantial moves into the organic food market:
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is throwing its weight behind organic products, a move that experts say could have the same lasting effect on environmental practices that Wal-Mart has had on prices by forcing suppliers and competitors to keep up.

Target developer will seek variance in Cicero

Tuesday, December 13th, 2005

A Buffalo development company that tried to build a Target last spring will try again. At issue is the 42-acre site, south of Stevens Drive, zoned for commercial buildings only up to 100,000 square feet.

To build the standard-sized 127,000-square-foot Target store would require a zone change approved by the town board.

However, after [...]

Wal-Mart: Job Creation Engine?

Monday, December 12th, 2005

Paul Krugman takes exception to Wal-Mart’s claim that the company “creates 100,000 jobs a year”:

Adding 100,000 people to Wal-Mart’s work force doesn’t mean adding 100,000 jobs to the economy. On the contrary, there’s every reason to believe that as Wal-Mart expands, it destroys at least as many jobs as it creates, and drives down workers’ [...]

Is Wal-mart the Problem?

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

Before congratulating ourselves too soon for shopping at Target over Wal-Mart, maybe we should ask: is Wal-Mart really the problem? This is not to let Wal-Mart off the hook, but rather could it be that Wal-Mart has simply reached the pinnacle of an economic system that encourages the problems Wal-Mart is renowned for. [...]

Wal-Mart completes a step forward in its plans to build a 205,000-square-foot store on 35 acres at Route 57 and the Liverpool Bypass.

The Salina planning board found Wal-Mart’s final environmental impact statement to be complete Thursday, which is a step forward for the company to build a SuperCenter north of Liverpool.

The board has to allow [...]

Rumors of a Saranac Lake Wal-Mart

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

The debate continues to heat up over the possibility of a Wal-mart opening in Saranac Lake even though its officially only a rumor. Adirondack Almanac recently posted on this growing debate, including a link to an Adirondack Daily Enterprise web poll on a Wal-mart in Saranac Lake. The poll generated a huge number [...]

Free Movie Screening of Wal-Mart: The Movie

Saturday, November 12th, 2005

Next week will be a grassroots Premiere Week for the new muckracking documentary, “WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price”. Free screening locations are peppered across the Central New York region. The documentary looks “into the real lives of workers and their families, business owners and their communities” affected by Wal-mart. Sounds [...]

Wal-Mart Update

Monday, October 31st, 2005

Money quote that I overlooked in the previous post on Wal-Mart expansion aspirations:

Wal-Mart Chief Executive Officer Lee Scott said earlier this year that he expects zoning laws to get tougher in the years to come, so Wal-Mart is eager to ramp up expansion now.

Wal-Mart marches on in Upstate:

The Potsdam Town Planning Board has finally given the go ahead for a Wal-Mart Supercenter on Route 11. Members unanimously approved the final site plan review.

The 184,000 square foot Supercenter will include a grocery store, gas station, tire lube, and garden center. Four-hundred full and part-time jobs will be created.
